Autistic child home schooling may seem to the casual observer to be an almost crazy idea. But actually there are several advantages to homeschooling your autistic child. Before we go into the advantages, though, let me give you one reason you may want to go this route.
Whether you believe it or not, you know your child better than anyone else. You are thus more qualified to determine his or her educational objectives. Of course, you may need some guidance along the way, but that is something that is easily solved.
The first advantage to homeschooling an autistic child during the school day is that you have total control over the environment. Unlike school settings, there are no bright fluorescent lights, loud bells, or large groups of noisy children to startle and confuse your autistic child.
The second advantage is that homeschooling allows you to have more time with your child. Autistic children simply need more of that high-quality contact that only home schooling can provide.
Now I understand there’s a concern about your autistic child’s socialization. But the kind of socialization that schools provide may or may not be the right kind for your autistic child.
Let’s be honest here, is your autistic child really taking advantage of all the opportunities to socialize in school? Probably not. By being at home with you and maybe a few siblings, he or she has a better chance of having successful social interactions that are more natural and healthy.
As far as curriculums are concerned, they are not as important as remediating your child’s autism. In fact, a good remediation program can take the place of a great curriculum any day. Academics are important, yes, but only as they enrich the child’s day-to-day experiences.
One of the educational models that fits in the best with remediation and therefore autistic child home schooling is Thomas Jefferson Education. The reason we like it so much is because it is child-centered and child-led. It requires an understanding of child development and can be combined with other excellent learning resources.
Because what the child studies is not dictated by an adult, the child learns to take responsibility for his or her own education. In this model, academic subjects are taught as life skills through an apprenticeship relationship, instead of through workbooks and multiple choice tests.
