I don't remember if I've talked about this before, but the kid has similar issues. She had a kind of melt-down when she was seven, around the time of Katrina; couldn't get out of this one chair, couldn't work at school, had to be walked to the bathroom, things like that. She went through about six months of therapy with our Dr. Faye (we love Dr. Faye) who did very much what it sounds like your social worker has in mind — yoga, focusing techniques, breathing exercises, other methods for handling anxiety (like building “safe places” in her mind). She still uses these techniques when she has anxiety attacks; they still work. She's much better now– in fact, she started getting better really soon after we got her help. Not all at once, but a big improvement very quickly.

It's one of the reasons I get annoyed at people who sneer at therapy or medical intervention for kids. She was in so much pain, and people (I won't name names) kept telling me “There's nothing wrong with that child!” as if I were making it up just so I could haul my kid to the therapist. You know, because I'm a goofy hysterical liberal who likes head-shrinking my kid. I should have prayed over her instead, I reckon.

    Gah.
