You can learn how to deal with anxiety. For those of us who get with anxiety attacks, we distinguish what it feels like. Our heart pounds. We get butterflies in our tummy. We fear and fret over everything and anything. We have hot and cold sweats. Our throats go dry and we have difficulty swallowing, just to name a few.
These anxiety attacks can appear from no where. I have spoken with lots of people who have said “my life is great; I don’t understand why I am suddenly suffering with anxiety attacks”. This is the nature of the beast. There is no chosen format for anxiety attacks. They can occur to people whose lives are going really well, as well, as those who lives are not going so well.
null It’s not like having a cold or some other illness, where there symptoms are typical and easy to see and diagnose.
Understanding what anxiety attacks are will help you to have more control and help you dealing with anxiety. It’s normal to worry and feel tense or fearful when under burden or facing a taxing situation. Anxiety is the body’s natural response to danger, an automatic alarm that goes off when we feel threatened.
From my personal understanding off living with anxiety attacks, I am aware of the fact that the more you think about the anxiety the stronger the symptoms become. The stronger the symptoms, the stronger the anxiety attacks become. Then you’re in the realms of a viscous circle. This is when it becomes really hard to over come your anxiety attacks.
It’s not till you truly become aware of the fact that your thoughts have shaped your anxiety, so it stands to reason that if you have manifested the anxiety attack then surely you can UNcreate the anxiety attacks. This element is really hard for people to understand. And I know precisely how they think! When I was told this, I rejected it. Why would I want to do this to myself? It did not make sense.
But at the end of the day no matter how much I tried to ignore that fact, it was accurate, my thoughts where the foundation of my anxiety. I experimented with it. The more I focused my energy on the anxiety the stronger my anxiety attack became. So with the help of a therapist, I was able to work on my thoughts and defeat my anxiety.
It would be a lie to say I am anxiety free, however I am much more able to deal with anxiety, I have more coping strategies. Dealing with anxiety is now much easier for me.
Another to bear in mind, is that anxiety may be unpleasant, but it isn’t always a difficult thing. This anxiety can help up be alert, the adrenalin can keep us focused. Wwhen anxiety is relentless, when it interferes with relationships and activities-that’s when you’ve crossed the line from normal anxiety into the territory of anxiety disorders.

When dealing with anxiety I usually either clean or write. But sometimes I'm not that productive and just let it swallow me up. We all can be susceptible to it sometimes I think.

My son has anxiety issues (planning a post on that soon)which often comes out as behaviour issues like trying to control the situation. After doing that mommy-obsession thing I started to think about how my own anxiety has held me back and how we parents model dealing with anxiety and the answer is not so well! I read Patricia Pearson's book on anxiety… didn't help just made me more anxious…Thanks for posting on this — a great discussion!
That orange chocolate cake looks extremely impressive ~ I'm sure your version will be even better though, as you always do a fabulous job with presentation. I wish I had the skill, courage and equipment necessary to tackle raw desserts!
I understand the need not to spill everything/disclose details on the blog ~ I hope that your life stabilizes again soon, but in the meantime give yourself credit for dealing with the anxiety as well as you are and actively being aware of it/acknowledging it. It won't overwhelm you, because you're too strong for that, I know it.

Another trick to dealing with anxiety while flying – especially if you are a geek travelling with a laptop or a CPAP user like myself (I had both!) – is to pack your carry-on bag very carefully, putting items that need to be removed for security scanners in a very easy to get to spot.
For example, if you're travelling with a laptop, don't even do so much as put a novel you're reading in the bag on top of it. If there are people behind you glaring when you're slow removing it from the bag, or people behind you glaring when you're trying to retrieve and pack it quickly on the other side of the scanner, it will make it that much harder to think and move quickly.
I developed a very strict packing routine on my recent trip that involved getting through airports every few days in the US with all the heightened security. It helped, trust me.
Oh, and try not to wear socks with holes in the toe. It's embarrassing when you need to take your shoes off! I did a long haul flight like that and got anxious everytime I neared a security checkpoint because people would see my big toe and judge me for it!

I have a big problem dealing with anxiety as well… but you're right, focusing on deep breathing really helps. My problem is that when I'm stressed or anxious, I start to hold my breath… sometimes it gets so bad that I'll start getting lightheaded almost to the point of fainting. But being conscious of my breath has helped tones…. and I'm going to incorporate some of the things you mentioned as well
